Well now that the school year has been over for a month, I though I'd make a few reflections on it.

First, I need to get more organized as far as getting content to the layout editor.  I think having some real contributing photographers besides myself will help so I don't need to worry about getting to all the events, etc.

Second, it's time to upgrade my camera.  I'm thinking a Canon 30D, grip, either a EF-S 17-55 or 50 1.8/85 1.8.  My powershot is a great camera, but it can't keep up with lowlight or fast action situations.

Third, working takes up a lot of my time, so next year I will cut back a bit on my commitment to the Echo so as to prioritize my schoolwork.

These are just a few of my thoughts.

Also, please feel free to give me C&C on my work, I strive to get better.

Yesterday, Friday the 27th I had the wonderful experience of going to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.  I met many great people there including a small part of Staff Photographers and a few others involved in the process.

Basically, I called Dave Denny, the person in charge of the Photo section of the News Room, ie. the photojournalists and he set me up with the Friday as a day for me to come in.

When I got there, a woman named LaVette brought me to Dave and he showed me around the Photo section.  As it was Friday, there were only a few photographers around, and the first one I met was Rick Sennott.  He showed me how photographers edit their pictures and the process they go through with several different programs, etc.  Rick introduced me to Renée Jones Schneider and Elizabeth Flores. Both were in the middle of some editing themselves.

Dave then brought me to the room where Photographers do studio work, the photographer was shooting something with pencils for education piece.  There I met Tom Wallace who took me on a photo shoot at a Hotel in Downtown Minneapolis on Hennepin Avenue.
I got to help him carry his gear including his two camera, a Canon 5D and a 30D.  He had a nice 70-200mm lens for me to play with, which was just fine with me.  I practiced my manual focusing skill, which I haven't had a chance to practice for a few years.  Apparently, it had a manual focus, but I didn't figure out how to use it at the time.

There I met Kyndell Harkness, another photographer for the Star Tribune, the primary shooter for the mermaid event.  She shoot and Tom did the lighting and I helped with the lighting and took some pictures.  Basically, it was a model dressed as mermaid and she layed in various positions in a bath tub.  It was fun.

After we were done, I helped Tom and Kyndell pack up. Tom left to go home and Kyndell and I went back to the Star Tribune.  There I met Jim Gehrz, the international photojournalist of the year in 2005 as awarded by the National Press Photographers Association.  He let me play with his Canon EOS-1D Mark II Digital SLR, a $4,000 camera, it was awesome!  The real cool thing was the 8.5 fps feature, it just blew me away the first time I held done the shutter button while in continuous mode.

I watched Jim edit some pictures one of which was on the front page of today's Saturday paper.  They he got out the long lenses for me, a 500mm and a 600mm and that was really cool.

Jim had to leave so I hung out with Kyndell some more and showed her my profile and she thought my pictures weren't bad.  She had to go to so I hung out with Dave Joles, another photographer.  At first he was editing some U of M pictures and he even asked me for my input on a few edits.  I followed his techniques and you can see the results at this www.deviantart.com/deviation/3… and this www.deviantart.com/deviation/3….

Later, we went on a shoot, and he let me use his Canon EOS-1D Mark II with a Canon 70-200 f/2.8, the same I used earlier.  He showed me how to do auto focus, which was a big help.  At the shoot, at a person's house, I just hung out in the background, watched and tooks some pictures of both Dave and the person he was shooting.

Then back to Augsburg where Dave was nice enough to let me have the pictures I took before he left.

Before I sign off, I just want to thank Dave Denny, Peter (can't remeber the last name), Rick Senott, Renée Jones Schneider, Elizabeth Flores, Tom Wallace, Kyndell Harkness, the mermaid model, Jim Gehrz and finally Dave Joles.  Thanks for a great day guys!
